What is Rideo?
Rideo is a minimalist local video player for iPhone and iPad built around a simple idea: open, play, loop. It is designed for clips you replay on purpose, like skills practice, therapy sessions, or any video you need to get just right, with looping, precise skipping, and a control bar you can reshape to fit your hands and your workflow.
Which video formats does Rideo play?
Rideo plays MP4, M4V, MOV, MKV, AVI, and WebM files, including videos with embedded subtitle tracks. If a file opens in the Files app but will not play anywhere else, it is still worth trying in Rideo, since the playback engine is built specifically for this format set rather than relying only on the system player.
How do I add videos to my library?
Tap Add Videos to pick one or more files, or Add Folder to import every playable video inside a folder at once, including subfolders. You can also drag and drop video files onto the library on iPad, or open a video from the Files app with Rideo and let it save to your library automatically.
Does Rideo copy or move my video files?
No. Rideo always plays your files in place and never copies, moves, or reorganizes them. Your library is simply a lightweight list of references to where your files already live, so deleting a library entry never deletes the underlying file from Files, iCloud Drive, or your external volume.
Where do my videos live? Do I need an account?
Your videos stay exactly where they already are, in the Files app, iCloud Drive, or on an external volume. There is no account, no sign-in, no streaming service, and no Rideo cloud. The app works fully offline once your files are downloaded to the device.
Does my library sync between devices?
No. Your library is intentionally per-device and never syncs, so each iPhone or iPad keeps its own list. Only your UI preferences, like button layout, colors, and timer settings, optionally sync through your own iCloud key-value store when you are signed in with iCloud.
Is Rideo free? What is Full Unlock?
Rideo is free to download and free to try with your first three library videos, and importing is always free and unlimited. Full Unlock is a single one-time $2.99 in-app purchase that unlocks playback of everything beyond those first three videos, forever. There is no subscription, and Full Unlock is family-shareable through Apple's Family Sharing.
How do I restore Full Unlock on a new device?
Open Settings, tap Unlock Full Version, then tap Restore Purchases while signed in with the same Apple ID you used to buy it. Because the purchase is tied to your Apple ID and cached in your iCloud key-value store, it also picks itself back up automatically on your other signed-in devices.
Does Rideo have a subscription?
No, and there are no plans for one. Full Unlock is a one-time non-consumable purchase tied to your Apple ID. You pay once, you keep it, and there is nothing to cancel.
Does Rideo track me or collect my data?
No. Rideo collects no personal data, includes no advertising SDKs, and performs no analytics tracking. Playback, your library, and your files never leave your device except for Apple's own StoreKit purchase processing and the optional iCloud settings sync you control.
How does looping work?
Turn on Loop and the current video repeats continuously until you pause or move on. It is built for repetition-heavy use, like practicing a move, replaying a cue, or letting a favorite clip run as a calm background reward during a session.
What are Continuous Play and Shuffle?
Continuous Play automatically advances to the next video when one ends, wrapping around at the end of the queue, which is ideal for a graduated set of clips or an earned-reward sequence. Shuffle randomizes that order. Loop always wins over Continuous when both would apply, so the two modes can never fight each other.
What is the session timer for?
The session timer is a countdown built for timed sessions, such as a roughly 30-minute block where the video plays as a reward between bites or tasks. You can set the duration, choose whether it starts or pauses with the video, and pick what happens at zero: pause playback, play an alarm sound, fade the screen to black, or any combination. It runs while the video is paused, because the session keeps going even when the video does not.
What is the sleep timer?
The sleep timer is separate from the session timer and works like a podcast sleep timer: it pauses playback once, either after the current video, after all videos, or after a set number of minutes. It is a one-shot control, so after it fires it resets itself to Off.
Can I customize the player controls?
Yes, that is one of Rideo's core ideas. You can reorder buttons, put them on the left or right cluster, pin the bar to any edge of the screen, choose an attached bar or floating pill, adjust button size and bar opacity, pick accent colors, set skip intervals, and toggle elements like the scrubber, timestamps, back button, restart, volume, captions, and the sleep timer. When every control is turned off, the bar gets out of the way entirely.
Does Rideo support captions?
Yes, for videos with embedded subtitle tracks, such as many MKV files. Enable the Captions control in Settings, then toggle captions from the player bar. If a video carries multiple subtitle tracks you get a track picker, your choice persists across track changes, and VoiceOver reports On, Off, or Unavailable when the current file has no tracks.
Does Rideo work with Siri, Shortcuts, and Spotlight?
Yes. Rideo ships with Play Video, Start Therapy Session, Toggle Loop, and Resume Last Video actions that work from the Shortcuts app, Siri phrases, and Control Center. Your library is also indexed in on-device Spotlight, so searching a video title can jump straight into playback through a deep link.
Is Rideo accessible with VoiceOver and Dynamic Type?
Yes. Every custom control has a label, stateful controls expose their values, the scrubber is a single adjustable element that steps by your skip interval, and hidden controls stay reachable to VoiceOver when the chrome auto-hides. The app supports Dynamic Type, rotation, and split view on iPad.
Does Rideo work on iPad? What about split view and drag and drop?
Yes. Rideo is universal for iPhone and iPad, supports rotation and split view, and on iPadOS you can drag video files directly onto the library to import them. Larger screens simply get roomier tiles and the same customizable player.
Why does a video show Loading, Waiting for file, or Unavailable instead of a duration?
Those states mean Rideo knows about the file but cannot read it yet. Loading covers brief indexing, Waiting for file usually means an iCloud placeholder that has not downloaded yet, and Unavailable means the file could not be resolved at all. Opening the library again after the download finishes heals most cases automatically, and the Try Again action retries resolution on demand.
What should I do if a video will not play?
First check that the file itself opens elsewhere and is fully downloaded if it lives in iCloud. Then use Try Again in the player or library, which re-resolves the file reference and often heals iCloud placeholders. If the whole queue is unresolvable you will get Back and Try Again instead of a frozen frame, and engine errors raise the chrome with Back and Retry so you are never stuck.
What happens when I delete a video? Can I undo it?
Deleting removes the entry from Rideo's library only and shows an Undo bar for five seconds. Your actual file in Files or iCloud is never touched, so even after Undo expires nothing is lost outside the app. If deletions should not happen at all on a shared device, Settings lets you disable the delete policy entirely.
What are the requirements?
Rideo requires iOS 26 or later on iPhone or iPad. iCloud settings sync additionally requires being signed in with iCloud on each device, while the library itself always stays local. Media keys, Shortcuts, and Spotlight integration need a real device and are inert in the simulator.
How do I get help or report a problem?
Use the Support link on the App Store listing to reach support with your device model, iOS version, the video format involved, and where the file lives (On My iPhone, iCloud Drive, or external volume). If a specific file misbehaves, noting whether it plays in Files and whether it is fully downloaded versus an iCloud placeholder helps enormously.
Privacy
Rideo collects no personal data. Your library stays on-device; only UI preferences optionally sync via your own iCloud KVS.
